Etihad Rail Onboard Experience and Booking Guide

Etihad Rail Onboard Experience and Booking Guide

Booking your first Etihad Rail ticket is one thing. Knowing what actually happens once you reach the station is another. From boarding rules to onboard comfort, this guide covers the practical side of riding Etihad Rail, plus what to do once you step off the train in Fujairah.

A Quick Look at the Project Behind Etihad Rail

Etihad Rail was established back in 2009 to build a national rail network for the UAE. Freight trains have been running since 2016, carrying goods such as sulphur from the gas fields near Habshan to the port at Ruwais. A longer freight corridor stretching from the Saudi border to Fujairah opened in 2023, and that same backbone now carries passenger services too.

The wider plan sits under the UAE Railway Programme, a federal infrastructure push with a reported investment of AED 50 billion. The long term goal is to connect 11 cities and regions from Al Sila in western Abu Dhabi through to Fujairah, with the network expected to generate significant economic and social value over the coming decades.

How to Book Your Etihad Rail Ticket

A reservation is required before you can board. You cannot simply turn up and pay at the gate. Tickets can be booked through a few different channels.

  • The Etihad Rail app
  • The official website
  • Ticket vending machines inside stations
  • The Etihad Rail Contact Centre

Online bookings stay open right up until close to departure, subject to seat availability, but it is worth booking ahead rather than relying on a last minute purchase. The booking platform also includes a built in journey planner, which maps your full trip and surfaces onward options like taxis and shuttle buses alongside the train ticket itself.

Booking Rules Worth Knowing

  • Children aged 14 and above can travel unaccompanied
  • Younger children must travel with a responsible adult
  • Infants can travel free on an adult's lap, one infant per accompanying adult
  • Groups of more than nine passengers need to book through the Contact Centre rather than the standard checkout, with confirmation usually arriving within a week

Boarding Etihad Rail

Boarding works a little differently from a metro station, where you simply tap in and walk through. Gates close two minutes before departure, so arriving early matters. You will need valid proof of identity matching the name on your ticket, and staff may ask to check it again during the journey.

If you miss your train, that ticket cannot be transferred to a later departure. A fresh ticket needs to be purchased. On the flip side, if Etihad Rail cancels a service, affected passengers are rebooked, offered an alternative train or refunded.

What the Journey Feels Like Onboard

The passenger fleet consists of 13 trains, each seating around 400 passengers, manufactured under an agreement with the Spanish rail company CAF. Trains are built to handle both open desert terrain and mountain routes at speeds up to 200km/h.

Comfort Class

  • Guaranteed seating
  • Onboard Wi-Fi
  • A power point at every seat
  • Generous luggage space

Premium Class

  • Wider seats with extra legroom
  • Reclining seating
  • Complimentary snacks and drinks
  • Priority boarding
  • Access to a premium lounge where available

Carriages also include infotainment screens and climate control throughout. Alcohol is not permitted onboard, and smoking or vaping is restricted to designated areas only.

Luggage, Pets and Family Travel

  • Luggage fits into designated storage areas or overhead racks, as long as aisles and exits stay clear
  • Pets are allowed onboard inside an approved carrier, one per passenger, though the carrier counts as your carry on allowance
  • Strollers are permitted if folded and stored away from walkways
  • E-scooters are not permitted under any circumstances

Stations and trains are designed with wheelchair access and dedicated onboard spaces. Passengers needing mobility support are encouraged to travel with their own equipment and, where needed, a companion.

Getting To and From Etihad Rail Stations

The Mohamed Bin Zayed City station in Abu Dhabi sits around 30km from the city centre and connects into the existing Hafilat bus network, with dedicated bike lanes and ample parking for those driving in. Etihad Rail also runs its own shuttle service from the station to a handful of key destinations for a flat fare of Dh10, including ADNOC headquarters, the ADNEC exhibition centre and Reem Mall.

On the Fujairah side, Al Hilal City station opens with a car rental desk, taxi ranks, e-hailing pickup points and bus connections, useful for anyone planning to explore beyond the station itself.

Why Fujairah Makes a Great First Etihad Rail Trip

Fujairah is one of the more underrated emirates for UAE residents who have already covered the usual Dubai and Abu Dhabi spots. With the train cutting the journey down to under two hours, it makes for an easy day trip or weekend escape.

Beaches and Snorkelling

Snoopy Island, just off Al Aqah Beach, is one of the better snorkelling spots in the Gulf, known for reef fish, turtles and the occasional reef shark in its shallow waters. Al Aqah Beach itself remains popular for a relaxed beach day, with day passes available for sunbeds and facilities.

Heritage Sites

  • Al Bidya Mosque, on the road between Dibba and Khorfakkan, is the oldest surviving mosque in the UAE
  • Al Bithnah Fort dates back to the 18th century and once guarded inland trade routes
  • Fujairah Fort rewards a short climb with sweeping views over the modern city below

Hiking and Mountains

Rainbow Valley offers a moderate to challenging hike through colourful sandstone formations in the Hajar Mountains, best done with a guide since the trail is not clearly marked. Wadi Abadilah is a gentler option, winding through farmland with banana, mango and date palm trees, and seasonal pools when conditions allow.

Practical Tips for a Smooth Trip

  • Book your ticket and choose your fare tier before travel day to lock in your seat
  • Arrive at the station well before the two minute gate closure cutoff
  • Keep your ID accessible throughout the journey
  • Use the shuttle service or onward transport options in the app rather than arranging separate transfers
  • Plan your Fujairah activities in advance since the return service runs on a fixed schedule
