First Time Using the Dubai Metro? Here's Exactly What to Do

New to the Dubai Metro? A step-by-step beginner's guide to buying a ticket, tapping in and out, and avoiding the most common first-timer mistakes.
It's simpler than it looks once you've done it once, but the first ride can feel like a lot if nobody's walked you through it. Here's the whole process, plus the small mistakes that trip up almost every first-timer.
Buying your ticket
Head to any station's ticket vending machine before you go through the gate. For a short visit, a Nol Red Ticket works fine (paper, single or multi-trip). If you're staying longer or making more than 2-3 trips, a Silver Nol card is better value since it's reusable and just needs topping up.
Getting through the gate
Tap your card or ticket on the yellow reader at the gate to enter, then tap again on the way out at your destination. This matters: the fare is worked out from where you tap in and where you tap out, not a flat rate, so skipping the exit tap causes real problems (more on that below).
Finding your platform
Check the signage for your line (Red or Green) and direction before you head down to the platform. At bigger interchange stations like Union or BurJuman, it's easy to end up on the wrong side if you're not paying attention, so give yourself a few extra minutes there especially.
Trains stop for about 20-30 seconds at each station, so start moving toward the doors a stop or two before yours.
- Buy a Red Ticket or Silver Nol card before the gate, not at it
- Tap in when entering, tap out when leaving, every time
- Check line and direction signage before going to the platform
- Give extra time at interchange stations like Union or BurJuman
The one mistake almost everyone makes: forgetting to tap out
If you leave a station without tapping out, the system charges the maximum fare for your card type by default, since it has no way to know your actual zones traveled. If your balance can't cover that, the card can be temporarily blocked until you sort it out, either by topping up correctly next time or visiting an RTA Customer Happiness Centre.
This trips up more first-time visitors than anything else, mostly because tapping out feels unnecessary once you're already leaving. Get in the habit of it from trip one and you'll never think about it again.
