Dubai Metro Blue Line: Everything We Know So Far

Complete 2026 update on the Dubai Metro Blue Line including planned route, stations and expected opening.
The Dubai Metro Blue Line is under construction and expected to open around 2029, though infrastructure projects in Dubai have a history of timeline shifts. What is certain is that it will connect areas of the city that currently have no metro access at all.
If you are visiting Dubai now, the Blue Line is not yet relevant to your travel planning. But if you live in Dubai or are thinking about where to invest or rent, it is worth knowing which areas stand to benefit most.
Recommended options
Mirdif
Large residential area east of the city
Currently has no metro access and residents depend on taxis and buses for all metro connected journeys. The Blue Line is expected to change this significantly and has been one of the most requested extensions by Dubai residents.
Dubai Silicon Oasis
Technology and residential free zone
A growing district with thousands of residents and workers that currently sits outside the metro network. Blue Line access would make it a much more practical base for people working in the area.
Academic City
University cluster with large student population
Home to more than a dozen universities and a large daily commuter population. Students and staff currently rely on buses and ride-hailing. Metro access would make this one of the biggest quality-of-life improvements the Blue Line delivers.
Current status
As of 2026, the Blue Line is confirmed and in active construction. The RTA announced the line as part of the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan. Tunnelling and station work is underway at multiple points along the route.
The target opening year of 2029 is the official figure, but treat that as a planning estimate rather than a guarantee. Large metro extensions in Dubai have previously opened on or close to schedule, which is a positive sign.
- Construction confirmed and underway as of 2026
- Target opening: 2029
- Part of the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan
Planned route and stations
The Blue Line is planned to run roughly east to west across a northern band of the city, connecting districts not currently served by the Red or Green lines. Key areas along the route include Mirdif, Dubai Silicon Oasis, Academic City, and parts of Al Warqa.
Confirmed stations include Etihad Museum and several key interchange points. The full station list has not been finalised publicly, so treat any specific station names as subject to change until the RTA publishes the official alignment.
How it connects to existing lines
The Blue Line is planned to interchange with the Red Line at specific hub stations, giving passengers a three-line network for the first time. The exact interchange stations have been indicated but not all confirmed officially.
For current metro users, the key benefit is that journeys currently requiring a taxi leg to reach eastern and northern districts will eventually become metro-only trips.
- Interchange with Red Line at key hub stations
- Extends coverage to eastern and northern Dubai
- Will reduce need for taxis in currently unserved areas
What this means for travellers
For tourists visiting before 2029, the Blue Line does not affect your current plans. The Red and Green lines cover the main tourist corridors and that will not change.
For people making longer term decisions about where to live or buy property in Dubai, the Blue Line corridor is worth factoring in. Areas currently hard to reach by public transport will become much more accessible.
