Dubai Airport to Downtown by Metro: Cheapest and Easiest Way

Step by step guide from Dubai Airport to Downtown Dubai by metro with fare, journey time and practical arrival tips.
The Dubai Metro from the airport to Downtown is one of the best value journeys in the city. From Terminal 3, you board the Red Line and ride directly to Burj Khalifa Dubai Mall station in about 35 to 40 minutes for AED 7.50.
No transfer, no haggling with a driver, no traffic worry. For most travellers arriving with manageable bags, this is simply the easiest option.
Recommended options
Budget traveller
Solo arrival with one bag, daytime or early evening
Metro is the clear choice. AED 7.50 versus AED 70 for a taxi is a real difference, the journey is easy to follow, and the train is comfortable and air conditioned. Buy your Nol card in arrivals and go.
Business traveller with luggage
Arriving with a large case and needing the hotel quickly
A taxi or pre-booked transfer makes more sense. Navigating a busy metro station with a large case at the end of a long flight adds unnecessary friction. The extra AED 60 is worth it.
Late night arrival
Flight landing after 10:30pm on a weekday
Check the metro schedule against your expected customs and baggage time. If the metro is running, it is still usable. If not, the official taxi rank in T3 arrivals is reliable and metered with no negotiation needed.
Which terminal has metro access
Terminal 3 has the most direct metro connection. After clearing customs and collecting bags, follow the green metro signs in the arrivals hall. The station is called Airport Terminal 3 (station code R29) on the Red Line.
Terminal 1 is also connected to the metro at Airport Terminal 1 station (code R28), just one stop away on the same Red Line. The walk from arrivals to the station is a bit longer than T3 but still well signed.
Terminal 2 does not have a metro station. If you land at T2, your options are taxi, ride-hailing, or an RTA bus toward a metro station. Most international and Emirates flights use T1 or T3, so this affects fewer travellers.
- Terminal 3: direct metro at Airport T3 station (R29)
- Terminal 1: metro at Airport T1 station (R28)
- Terminal 2: no metro, use taxi or RTA bus
Step by step from T3
After collecting your bags, follow metro signs to the station. Buy a Nol card from a machine in the arrivals hall before going through the metro gates. Load at least AED 20 to cover the fare and leave a small balance for the return.
Board the Red Line train in the direction of UAE Exchange or Expo City Dubai. Stay on until Burj Khalifa Dubai Mall station. The fare is AED 7.50 and the ride takes roughly 35-40 minutes with stops.
At Burj Khalifa Dubai Mall station, there is a covered walkway to Dubai Mall. Most Downtown hotels are reachable from there by foot, taxi, or a short ride share.
- Buy Nol card before entering the metro gates
- Red Line, direction UAE Exchange or Expo City
- Exit at Burj Khalifa Dubai Mall station
Buying your Nol card
Ticket machines are in the arrivals area of T3 and T1. They accept cash and cards and the interface is available in English. A standard Nol card costs AED 25 (AED 19 deposit plus AED 6 starting credit), or you can get a Red Nol (disposable) card for AED 2 per journey.
The reloadable Nol card is worth buying if you plan more than two trips during your stay. You can top it up at any machine or via the RTA app.
Late night arrivals
The metro runs until midnight on weekdays (Sunday to Wednesday) and until 1am on Thursdays. On Fridays it starts later at 10am and runs until 1am. On Saturdays it runs from 6am to midnight.
If your flight lands after 11pm on a weekday, the metro may not be a realistic option once you clear customs and collect bags. In that case, a taxi from the official rank in arrivals is straightforward and metered.
- Metro closes at midnight on weekdays (Sun-Wed)
- Runs until 1am on Thursday and Friday
- Use the official taxi rank if metro is closed
Metro vs taxi honest comparison
A taxi from Airport T3 to Downtown costs roughly AED 60-80 depending on traffic, time of day, and exact destination. The metro costs AED 7.50. For a solo traveller with one bag, the metro wins on cost and often on time too.
For two or three people travelling together, the cost difference narrows considerably. At AED 80 split three ways versus AED 7.50 each, a taxi starts to look more reasonable, especially if you have heavy luggage.
Late at night, in extreme heat, or with very young children, the taxi offers convenience that is genuinely worth paying for. There is no universal right answer, only the right answer for your situation.
